Packaging Audit

As a result of our unique combination of skills and expertise, Smurfit Kappa Ireland can offer customers a consultancy service called the Packaging Audit. Packaging accrues costs as it moves through the supply chain, from incoming raw materials to finished goods transportation and storage, through to final packaging disposal. The sum of all these costs is the Total Cost of Packaging. We can provide a team of experts to help minimise this total cost, adding value for our customers and their customers in turn.

What is the Total Cost of Packaging?

Packaging costs are the costs associated with packaging as it moves through the packaging user’s production process:

  • Incoming materials cost – price per box.
  • Incoming logistics cost – cost per truck unloaded.
  • Raw material storage cost – cost per pallet.
  • Manufacturing cost – cost per unit to assemble, fill and seal packaging.
  • Outgoing logistics cost – cost per pallet of FG storage & transportation.
  • Waste disposal cost – cost of disposing of incoming packaging waste.
  • Regulatory cost – cost of complying with EU legislation (e.g. Repak tariff per tonne placed on Irish market).

The aim of the Packaging Audit is to minimise the total cost of packaging for the customer

  • By looking at each cost area & how package design, supply method and material influence the cost.
  • By focusing on the areas in which improvements can be made & assessing the impact of proposed changes through the entire process.
  • By making recommendations for change based on this analysis.
  • By assessing waste management practices and costs of recycling & disposal against best practice and making recommendations for change.
